Access Recreation had been the accessibility consultant with sculptor artist, Ed Carpenter, and the Portland Parks Foundation, for this gorgeous footbridge that was intended primarily to remedy the unsafe crossing of the Wildwood Trail over the incessant flow of traffic along West Burnside.

AR proposed that the new footbridge could be much more than just a remedy for the Wildwood Trail — it has an even greater positive impact on the community as a whole, not just hikers. It allows for an easier physical and conceptual connection between two of Portland’s most iconic destinations: Hoyt Arboretum  and Pittock Mansion, both of which provide essential amenities for all users and especially for people with disabilities — water and restroom facilities, accessible parking and reliable bus service at the Hoyt VC.

Since the Wildwood Trail bypasses the Hoyt VC altogether, and to a lesser degree, Pittock Mansion, AR  determined that the trails with the fewest obstacles to reach the bridge are the Spruce Trail and the Redwood Trail.

The Hoyt VC is reachable by way of a paved accessible path all the way from the Oregon Zoo MAX station, suggesting that hikers and families of many abilities can start downtown and find their way to Pittock Mansion without relying on any form of automotive vehicles.
